General feeling upon arriving in the polling station was a sense of privilege and luck in which we can vote in such a safe and stable place where my vote will count and that there's no scandals or tomfoolery like in recent elections in Iraq and Zimbabwe. I do not agree with any of the parties in power or 'the big 3', however we are so lucky to have a voice.

ELECTION 2010: Behind all the big talk, promises... the masks...aren't they all the same really?? Some might say clones of each other! Sums up what I was trying to say with these Lego Star Wars Clones & using masks ( from the BBC ), to show that are all the same really. Strange how that now we have a coalition that both LibDems & Conservatives have had to comprise & become similar.

Dai Davies was running as an Independent. The seat was orginally lost to the independent party set up by late MP and AM Peter Law in 2005 after an internal row. After his death in 2006, Mr Law's agent Dai Davies was returned to Westminster. But the voters in this seat, which used to be the safest Labour Westminster seat in Wales, returned to the fold on Thursday and elected new MP Nick Smith.

Swales won the Redcar constituency and is the first non-Labour MP to represent the seat. It's been in Labour hands since it was created in 1974, and in the last 36 years has only had three MPs. Swales won with a majority of 5,214 after a swing of nearly 22% from Labour's Vera Baird. The most high profile issue in the constituency in the run up to the General Election has been the mothballing of the Corus steel plant. Vera Baird was heavily involved in the campaign to save Corus but there was criticism of the Government for not stepping in.

Parliament Square: - There are a couple of protests on the grass in the middle of Parliament Square, right opposite the Houses of Parliament. You can’t get to talk to the protesters as they are cut off by four lanes of manic traffic. There is no obvious pedestrian crossing to get to them. Some people think that the government has never told us the truth about Iraq (or Afghanistan). They say the government won’t even tell us what the civilian death toll has been. The protesters have a banner which says 2,000,000 dead, 4,000,000 fled. Unbelievable - but probably true. I’m sure if the figures weren't right someone would have made them take them down. That’s free speech for you. You need good eyesight to see the placard though.
Floating Voter: - this is my friend Chris Tunnicliffe on holiday in Cyprus a year or so ago. We wasn't sure who to vote for in the last election. He was a floating voter.
Outside the British Council offices just off the Mall in London near Admiralty Arch is a statue by Barry Flanagan called “Large Mirror Nijinski” dated 1992. It represents two hares on columns, fighting. Barry made the hares almost identical and emphasised their athletic gestures (like Nijinski who used to defy gravity). The more I look at the hares the more I think they are two almost identical politicians, constantly fighting, for no apparent reason. All the action takes place over our heads, ignored by everyone (mostly foreign tourists hereabouts). Barry needs to make a third hare now.
County Hall, London - a democratic fun fare: - I tried hard to photograph the run-up to the election but there was little sign of it. The action wasn't on the streets, doorsteps or in shopping malls, it was going straight into people’s living rooms via their televisions. Then I passed London's County Hall. London was one of the world's premier cities. This was its seat of democracy, but a few years ago someone in Westminster decided that London didn’t need a democracy. They turned County Hall into a fun fare. They sell tickets for the London Eye there. It has the “Death Trap” (you can go inside and get the fright of your life, apparently) and several food outlets, including a Japanese restaurant that even has its name spelt the French way. Does it still have an aquarium, a hotel and a modern art galley? I think if you turn democratic institutions into fun fares you must expect voters to be antagonistic and disenchanted.

I have attached a photo of me counting the votes for the Central Constituency in Sheffield last night. I think it must have been taken about half way through the count. The vote was really close between the Lib Dems and Labour (16973 versus 17138) so close in fact that I didn't leave until 7am this morning and haven't got to bed yet!!! The weird thing is, the photo was actually taken by a Swiss Newspaper. I think it must have been taken about half way through the count. I only found out today because I work in a Language College and one of the foreign language assistants is Swiss and was keeping up to date about the election last night via his country's newspapers. He got a bit of a shock when he saw me in his home paper.

Small poster image outside polling station in East Belfast for Belfast Current Allaince Mayor Cllr Naomi Long who topped the poll in East Belfast becoming the first Allaince MP and ousting Peter Robinson, NI's First Minister who has held the seat for over 30 years. Providing a positive outward looking agenda, the connections were made with the Obama campaign, in a very non fussy and discreet way, with these posters and this message appearing later than the other posters... and the rest is herstory.
'Yes she can and she did' .....
the discreet yellow poster contrast to 'the big campaign' of the independant candidate Rodney Connor referred to as the unionist unity candidate in Fermanagh and South Tyrone. Connor entered politics on the 1st April 2010, after retiring as a CEO from Fermanagh District Council on the 31st March 2010.
The F& T is a seat which has always been a controversial one, as a border area, which has suffered significantly over the recent 'Troubles', but most especially as it is a 50/ 50 split if not a mationalist majority. However it is a seat largely held by unionists except when it was won by H Bloick Hunger-strike protester Boddy Sands. The seat was lost by Connor to the sitting SF MP Michelle Gildernew, although the process invovled three counts, and there is 4 votes of a difference, and Connor has stated that legal advice is being sought. It is rumoured that coiuntefeit ballot papers were identified within the counting. This very large poster, is the largest I have seen in N Ireland within this campaign. It suggest clearly that the building is owned by a Connor supporter and an established business owner (perhaps someone also influential in one of the unionist camps?).

Time for a Real Change

For the first time ever I found the decision on who to vote for extremely hard. The expenses scandal of the last parliament and the fact that none of the candidates really represent my views made me feel disillusioned. I'd heard of an online petition to include a 'None of the Above' option on ballot papers and I was inspired to create an image reflecting my thoughts on the subject. I do not advocate wasting a ballot paper (and I didn't) but I did relish the opportunity to express my feelings.

Photo is of Heather speaking to Washington Coalition of Open Government/WashCOG Open Government Conference 2010 last January at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA. Least I can do to say thank you is back her up and get out the vote... oh and video of her talk is on Vimeo at http://vimeo.com/9735254

Among other things on the Flickr posting was this Heather Brooke quote:

"What I've learned is that there is no magic person or institution that waves a wand and makes us better or safer. Rather, it is you and me - each of us as individual citizens. Society is only as good as those who are willing to stand up and ask questions of the people in power and hold them individually accountable for the decisions they make in our name and with our money." Heather Brooke, The Silent State, page 2

Kind of appropriate that Newsbrooke make this group, methinks. The MP Expenses scandal shaped and molded this election and subsequent events just as much as the British debt load.

I took this photograph on my journey home from college today [04/05/2010] near the Wilton site, Kirkleatham Lane Redcar. Personally I am not a UKIP supporter however, I was intrigued by the bold promotion of the UKIP party amongst an area where there are strong Labour and Liberal Democrat supporters.
This came as a surprise to me mainly because in the last general election, 2005, the main parties campaigning were the leading parties however this general election I have found that parties such as UKIP have risen. I feel that this is due to the lack of trust in the leading parties mainly as a result of the lack of action from both the Tories and Labour. Therefore i believe that political parties such as UKIP and the Green Party for example are seen as an ulternative resulting in more people voting for them.

here i recite my election haiku:

Just Vote
never mind the natural volcanic ash or the pervasive cynical political smoke
remember those iconic people who resolutely rocked the status quo boat
to extend the democratic right to vote... so choke apathy and vote, just vote!

Former Irish Rugby player Trevor Ringland doesn't have a realistic chance of election. Interesting to note that the Irish rugby team is selected from the whole of Ireland yet he is standing as a candidate for the Ulster Conservative Unionist New Force. A vote for Vance, who is opposed to the power sharing government with Sinn Fein (calling them terrorists) will be seen as a protest vote against the greed of the incumbant (and First Minister) Peter Robinson.

I'm studying Contemporary lens media at Lincoln University and producing a politically themed project for my 3rd year degree show. My work focuses on eliminating all bias from the political process and breaking it all down into a simple mathematical formula. Using a simple calculation based around when the individual registered to vote and how many elections they've participated in I generate a score out of 10. Here's the maths- (Y/X) x 10 = A
X = Total number of UK General Elections since year of registration.
Y = Total number of UK General Elections participated in.
A = Political rating out of 10.
